Communicating effectively via the spoken word — as in any verbal presentation — calls for a unique set of skills and techniques. Based on contemporary research and real-world experience, EMA’s training programs focus on developing and delivering powerful spoken messages in a range of situations.

Comprehensive Media Training
Under continual development for 20 years, our original training program prepares CEOs, organizational spokespersons and other senior managers to deal with the media in today’s transparency-demanding news environment. Your three-person training team includes an experienced investigative reporter and longtime news videographer utilizing a combination of classroom tools, open discussion and video clips. Every facet of the interview from first contact to conclusion is explored, including message development, practice, performance, appearance and control techniques. The full-day program accommodates up to five trainees, providing at least two rounds of on-camera practice time for each. Staffers responsible for supporting executives are encouraged to observe in order to acquire effective preparation techniques. We customize each session to address the trainees’ and organization’s specific needs and situation. As outcomes, we provide spokespersons with the skills — and more importantly the confidence — necessary to actively manage media exposure for the organization’s benefit, especially in controversial or difficult situations.

Advanced Media Training
High-level coaching is available to Comprehensive Media Training graduates. Hourly rates are based on the desired configuration of the training team.

Media Interviews as Marketing Opportunities
This intensive half-day program covers the process of developing the most effective key messages for a specific situation. Designed to help B2B marketers prepare for actual trade show press conferences, new product launches or media tour appearances, it is fully customized to fit your real-world requirements. Trainees learn multiple tactics for deploying key messages and engage in practice Q & A to test them.

 Answering the Toughest Questions
Our most advanced program requires completion of either our Comprehensive Media Training or our Crisis Communications Training. (Trainees must have prior familiarity and practice with the key controlling techniques for verbal interchanges.) Anyone facing controversy or the need to answer difficult questions in public, whether in a media interview or at a contentious public meeting, will benefit from learning the most advanced techniques for dealing with a full range of question types most commonly encountered. We will work with and address the actual real-world issues you’re facing, making this an ideal preparation tool. Half-day or more as required.

 Media Training Workshop
An ideal program for inclusion on meeting agenda, this popular half-day workshop provides an introduction to the basic requirements and principles for becoming an effective spokesperson, while demonstrating the “rules of the game.” Designed for executive teams wishing to understand media behavior and reporters’ tactics and techniques, it is also perfect for those considering taking on the role of spokesperson who want to understand the job.

 Executive Presentation Coaching
Designed for any CEO or organizational leader who must deliver a major speech or presentation, or participate in a forum, panel discussion or other critical public speaking situation. We provide customized situational coaching to fit your exact needs, with everything from speechwriting and editing support to rehearsal and venue management. Customized coaching maximizes and leverages the skills you already have and helps you connect personally in any environment.

Crisis Communications Training

How you handle yourself in the first hours of a crisis determines the outcome — how you are ultimately viewed in the “court of public opinion.” Our comprehensive training incorporates the latest research and global best practices regarding crisis communications and crisis management. In one full day, your organization will get a crisis communications plan and learn how to use it. Top management and the organization’s entire front-line crisis team, typically 15 to 20 people, are encouraged to attend.

Crisis First Response Training for Frontline Responders
An adaptation of our Crisis Communications Training, designed specifically for organizations with multiple facility locations separated by time or distance. Facility managers and other frontline managers are provided with the tools and the understanding to properly manage the first minutes and hours of a crisis situation in order to protect the organization’s overall reputation. Ideally suited for mid-size companies lacking specialist skills in-house, and especially those with high-risk public exposure such as hospitals, universities, nursing homes, banks and multi-location hospitality and foodservice chains.

Communicating Bad News
Bad news may — or may not — indicate a crisis is at hand. But bad news handled improperly almost always leads to one. This half-day program, designed for senior management teams, introduces the master strategies and tactics for conveying bad news to both internal and external audiences in the least damaging ways. Training materials and topics are extracted from contemporary research in the field and enhanced with EMA’s extensive real-world crisis management experience.

Managing Public Meetings
A new half-day program designed for companies, organizations or public authorities expecting to participate in any kind of public meeting: an open house or governmental hearing, forum, panel discussion or other critical public speaking situation. Individuals and groups anticipating a contentious meeting or concerned about a possibly hostile audience will be reassured by learning a new, more productive approach. Based on EMA’s extensive experience in siting battles for industrial, retail and energy projects such as power plants, pipelines and wind farms, this program will reveal proven strategies and tactics for planning, organizing and managing public meetings for effective outcomes.

Government Advocacy Training
A full-day program for CEOs, senior management, government and community relations specialists and any staff who may take part in meeting with governmental decision-makers. During this full-day workshop, participants are taught the keys to effective advocacy by a training team that includes a former high-level government official. Trainees learn the essential techniques for preparing messages as well as conducting successful face-to-face meetings with elected officials, policy makers and their staffs. Ideal for preparing/rehearsing for specific lobbying initiatives, this program is often used by organizations wishing to test run their key messages for persuasiveness.
