After centuries of industrial use and contamination, Onondaga Lake is one of the largest and most complex Superfund projects in the Unites States. EMA assisted Honeywell with their media relations and community outreach and provided strategic counsel in support of their remediation efforts.
Case Study Details
Onondaga Lake is one of Central New York’s great natural resources. It’s also home to one of the largest environmental remediation projects in the United States. Under the supervision of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Honeywell Inc. maintains a leadership role in the cleanup of industrial pollution found in the lake, located just west of Syracuse. In an effort to help facilitate the active input and involvement of citizens and community organizations in the cleanup, Honeywell worked with EMA’s public affairs team.
Working first for Allied Signal and its successor, Honeywell Inc., EMA provided strategic counsel and community relations services, local and state-level public affairs support, and assisted on an array of public information outreach initiatives to encourage public participation in the development of the remediation plan and to manage relationships with neighbors, news media, environmental advocates and other special interest groups.
The Environmental Protection Agency, New York State and the company signed a consent decree in 2008 allowing all parties and the community to move forward together on the cleanup of Onondaga Lake. EMA provided media and community relations support as the project successfully moved to the implementation phase. Dredging and capping work began in mid-2012, and the cleanup effort is progressing on schedule. While EMA’s role on the project is now complete, the successful rebirth of Onondaga Lake as a thriving habitat for wildlife and a valued asset for public access and recreation is well underway.
